Young Boaters Required Safety Course

Registration Open for Young Boater Safety Certification Course Saturday 2/17 from 9am to 5pm at the 2024 CNY Boat Show

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Central New York Boat Show have announced the return of the New York State Young Boater Safety Certificate Course to the Central New York Boat Show. The free course certifies youth ages 10 to 17 to legally operate a motorized boat or watercraft alone on New York waters.

The course will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in an Expo Center upstairs conference room at the New York State Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Boulevard, Syracuse, New York.

Pre-registration for the course is required, contact New York Sea Grant’s Oswego Office at 315-312-3042.

 Youth must successfully complete the 8-hour training and same-day proctored exam to receive certification. The instructor for the course at the 2024 CNY Boat Show will be U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 21 Past Commander Peter Wiles.

Each youth registering for the Young Boater safety course will receive three free admission passes into the February 15-18, 2024 Central New York Boat show that is the largest and oldest boat show in New York. Course participants are asked to provide for their own lunch.

The 2024 Central New York Boat Show showcases more than 400 all-new models of power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and docks in the Expo Center and Exhibit Center at the NYS Fairgrounds. The 2024 event will have a special section devoted to previously-enjoyed boats. Show hours are 1-9 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, and Friday, February 16, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, February 18. Admission is $12 per person, 13 and younger free; free parking and shuttle provided.

Adult Boaters Required Safety Course

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, New York Sea Grant, and Central New York Boat Show have announced that an adult-level New York State Boater Safety Certificate Course will be offered at the 2024 Central New York Boat Show in February at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York. The free boating safety course certifies individuals to legally operate a motorized boat or personal watercraft alone on New York waters. Pre-registration for the course is required, contact New York Sea Grant’s Oswego office at 315-312-3042.

This certification opportunity at the CNY Boat Show will help boaters of all ages meet Brianna’s Law timeline that requires every operator of a motorized watercraft, including personal watercraft, on New York state waters complete a New York State-approved boating safety course by 2025. Adults and youth must successfully complete the 8-hour training and the same-day proctored exam to receive certification.

The adult-level New York State Boater Safety Certificate Course at the CNY Boat Show will be offered on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. in an Expo Center upstairs conference room at the New York State Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Boulevard, Syracuse, New York. Each adult registering for the course will receive free admission to the 2024 CNY Boat Show.
